Basement Bathroom Addition
Basement Bathroom Addition in Wichita, KS
A bathroom downstairs saves trips up the stairs and makes a guest room or teen suite work. We plan the drain, the pump and the fan before anyone touches the slab.

What a basement bathroom involves
The drain location decides most of the plan.
Plumbing in a basement has to move waste up and out. If your house drain sits low enough, the bath can run on gravity. If not, a sewage ejector pit lifts the waste to the main line.
Gravity drain
Works when the main line sits below the new fixtures. It is usually the lower-cost route.
Ejector pump
A sealed pit and pump lift waste upward when the drain is too high.
Ventilation
A fan vented outdoors keeps moisture from damaging the finish.
Waterproofing
Floors and walls near the bath need the right backer and sealant.
What is under the slab
Cutting the slab is the messy part, so we plan it once. We mark every line, cut a clean trench, set the pipes and slope them, then pour the patch back to the same level.
Step by step
How the job runs
- Find the drain. We locate the main line and set the fixture spots.
- Plan the plumbing. A licensed plumber chooses gravity or a pump.
- Cut and rough in. The slab is cut, lines are set, and the pit goes in if needed. Inspection follows.
- Close and finish. Backer board, tile, fixtures, fan, lighting and paint.
- Test and inspect. Every fixture is run before final approval.
Budget
What moves the price
HomeGuide lists a basement half bath at about $3,000 to $5,000 when converting existing space and $6,000 to $11,000 as an addition. A full bath runs about $8,000 to $25,000 converted or $16,000 to $55,000 as an addition (HomeGuide*). A sewage ejector pump alone adds roughly $2,000 to $5,500.
| Driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Nearby plumbing | Existing pipes and drains lower the cost. |
| Ejector pump | Needed when the bath sits below the main drain. |
| Size and layout | A full bath needs more framing, tile and fixtures. |
| Waterproofing | Moisture control adds cost where the basement is damp. |
Code points for a basement bath
Bathroom ventilation, tile and fixtures are planned before framing closes. A licensed plumber must do the plumbing work under the local contractor rules (MABCD).

Questions about basement bathroom addition
Can any basement have a bathroom?
Most can, as long as waste can drain by gravity or by an ejector pump.
Do I need a pump?
Only if the drain is too high for gravity. A plumber checks this on the walk-through.
How much does it cost?
HomeGuide lists $3,000 to $11,000 for a half bath and $8,000 to $55,000 for a full bath (HomeGuide*).
Do I need a permit?
Yes. See our permits guide.
Does it need a window?
A basement bathroom usually has no window, so we plan a vent fan that exhausts outside and check it with the building department during permitting.
Can I add a shower later?
Yes if we rough in the drain now. Tell us during planning.
