What a home theater build includes

A good theater is mostly about the room, not the screen.

Basements are a natural fit: they are dark, they are below the bedrooms and the concrete walls block outside noise. What they need is a plan for wires, sound and seating before the walls close.

Wiring

Conduit and low-voltage runs for the screen, speakers and equipment.

Sound

Insulation and a staggered or double drywall layer reduce leakage.

Light

Dimmable lights, sconces and dark finishes cut glare.

Seating

Riser depth and sight lines are set before framing.

Design for sound first

Sound leaks through the ceiling more than the walls. We add insulation between joists, resilient channel where it helps and solid doors. Then the room can be loud without waking anyone upstairs.

Step by step

How the job runs

  1. Pick the room. We choose a space away from bedrooms and set the screen wall.
  2. Plan the wiring. Power, speaker and signal paths are laid out on paper.
  3. Frame and insulate. Walls, ceiling and any riser, with sound control.
  4. Close and finish. Drywall, dark paint, flooring and trim.
  5. Hand off. Your AV installer sets screens and speakers, and we finish around them.

Budget

What moves the price

Angi lists a home theater at about $20,000 on average, with a typical range of $10,000 to $60,000 (Angi*). Finishing a bare basement room costs less than building from nothing, and seating and acoustic panels vary widely.

DriverWhy it matters
Room sizeA larger room needs more seats and speakers.
Room typeA bare basement costs less than a new build.
SeatingTheater recliners cost more than a sofa.
AcousticsPanels and wall treatment add to the price.

Code and safety points

Wiring must be done under a licensed electrician and permitted (MABCD). A theater is a sleeping-adjacent space in many homes, so alarms and an escape route still matter. The U.S. Fire Administration advises planning two ways out (USFA).
