What a wet bar installation includes

A wet bar is a small kitchen with a social job.

The sink is what makes it a wet bar. That means a drain, a water line and, in some basements, a small pump. We place the bar close to existing plumbing where we can, because that saves the most money.

Prefab or custom

Prefab units go in faster. Custom bars fit the room and look built-in.

Counter and seating

A 42-inch counter with stools, or a 36-inch one with chairs.

Cabinets and shelves

Storage for glasses, bottles and small appliances.

Fridge and ice

A small fridge needs its own outlet and room to breathe.

Where the bar should go

Put the bar where it can see the TV and the seating area, and where the drain is close. A bar on the far side of a basement can need a long trench in the slab, and that is the line item that surprises people most.

Step by step

How the job runs

  1. Choose the spot. Near a drain, with room for stools and traffic.
  2. Rough in. Water, drain and a dedicated circuit, then inspection.
  3. Build the base. Cabinets, framing for the counter and any seating wall.
  4. Top it off. Counter, backsplash, sink and fixtures.
  5. Light and finish. Under-shelf and pendant lights, paint and trim.

Budget

What moves the price

HomeGuide lists a prefab home bar at about $2,000 to $12,000, and a custom bar, often built in a basement, at about $10,000 to $30,000 (HomeGuide*). Plumbing runs about $450 to $1,800 per fixture, and counters and cabinets are priced by size and material.

CountersStone costs more than laminate.
AppliancesA fridge or dishwasher adds cost.

Code and safety points

Plumbing and electrical must be done by licensed trades under the local rules (MABCD). A new circuit usually needs a permit. See our permits guide.
